ASD and the NDIS

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), commonly known as Autism, affects approximately one in every 100 children in Australia. Being a lifelong developmental disability, it requires continuous support and assistance throughout an individual's life. 
The first step to getting support for an autistic child is to get a diagnosis. Diagnosis is usually made by a pediatrician or a child psychiatrist.  Once a diagnosis is made (given a level 1, level 2 or level 3 rating), it is important to register the child with the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). This scheme provides financial assistance and access to services for people with disabilities, including autism. 
NDIS provides funding for a range of services such as therapy, support workers, mobility aids, and equipment.
It is important to note that the application process for NDIS can be complex and time-consuming. Families will meet with a planner who will determine their child's eligibility for financial assistance and what services they require.
